Beyond the game

The real Allosaurus

Allosaurus was a large meat-eating dinosaur that walked on two legs. Its strong hind limbs supported the body, while a long tail helped balance it. It lived during the Late Jurassic, long before Tyrannosaurus rex appeared in the Late Cretaceous.

Many remains come from the Morrison Formation of western North America; other finds document Allosaurus in Portugal. These records represent different specimens and localities, not one excavation. Comparing them helps researchers investigate variation within the genus.

Allosaurus has been studied since the nineteenth century. Even with many fossils, its behavior is less directly accessible than its anatomy. Discovering several individuals together does not by itself demonstrate that they cooperated in a hunting pack.

An evolutionary family whose members share ancestors. This grouping does not imply that one named dinosaur directly became another.

Get to know Allosaurus

Questions, answered.

How can you recognise Allosaurus?

Look for the raised structures above the eyes and hands with three clawed fingers. It was a two-legged predator with serrated teeth, but its skull and hands distinguish it from the much later T. rex. [1]

What did Allosaurus eat?

Other animals were its food. It shared its environment with herbivorous dinosaurs, including Stegosaurus and long-necked sauropods. Listing a potential prey animal does not establish that every individual hunted healthy adults of that species. [1]

Could Allosaurus fight T. rex?

They did not live at the same time. Allosaurus belongs to the Late Jurassic; T. rex lived near the end of the Cretaceous. A meeting between them is a game or movie scenario, not a known prehistoric encounter. [1] [2]

A note on the science

Pack hunting is a hypothesis, not a behavior established simply by finding multiple skeletons in one deposit.
