Beyond the game
The real Shantungosaurus
It was a huge herbivorous hadrosaurid. It is among the largest known duck-billed dinosaurs and its remains come from several units of the Wangshi Group.
One of its known skulls measures about 1.63 meters long. The head helps convey its scale, although reconstructing the whole body requires comparing it with the other bones.
Hadrosaurids had dental batteries for processing vegetation. Some had hollow crests and others lacked them: “duck-billed” does not mean they were ducks or that they all ate the same foods.
