The rim of its neck frill looked like a crown of bone. Large ornaments edged the frill, alongside a prominent nose horn and smaller horns above the eyes. This combination distinguished it from other ceratopsids, although they shared its sturdy body and plant-based diet.

Beyond the game

The real Regaliceratops

It is known especially from a very well-preserved skull found in Alberta, Canada. The nickname ‘Hellboy’ arose during its study, but its scientific name better captures the impression of its bony crown.

Regaliceratops combines features reminiscent of different horned-dinosaur branches. This does not make it a fantasy hybrid: evolution can produce similar forms in different lineages, something scientists call convergence.
