Beyond the game

The real Maxakalisaurus

It was a titanosaur found in Minas Gerais in 1998. Its name refers to the Maxakalí people and the species name refers to one of its divinities.

Grooves on the surface of its teeth were unusual among sauropods. Even small details like these help reveal the variety of titanosaurs.

Titanosaurs were long-necked sauropods. The group includes giants and relatively small species; membership of the group does not automatically determine body size.
