Beyond the game
The real Argentinosaurus
Argentinosaurus was a giant long-necked sauropod from Argentina. Its fragmentary remains include very large vertebrae and limb bones. Those pieces are enough to identify an extraordinarily large animal, but they do not preserve a complete skeleton that can simply be measured.
Researchers estimate missing parts through comparisons with other sauropods. Different reconstructions can therefore give different lengths and masses. It remains among the largest known land animals without needing a single exact figure or an undisputed first-place ranking.
It belonged to the titanosaurs, a diverse branch of sauropods that included relatively small species as well as giants. Membership of that group describes evolutionary relationships; it does not automatically assign the same body size to every titanosaur.
A branch of long-necked sauropods including both giants and relatively small species.

Exact length and mass remain uncertain. Size rankings change with the assumptions used to reconstruct missing parts.
