Beyond the game
The real Lambeosaurus
Its name honors paleontologist Lawrence Lambe. The history of the genus includes several revisions of skulls and species, some of which ended up being assigned to other dinosaurs.
Some young specimens were first classified as distinct dinosaurs because of the shape of their crests. Growth changes the shapes of the skull. Comparing individuals of various ages allows us to review old names and distinguish a different species from a juvenile stage.
Hadrosaurids had dental batteries for processing vegetation. Some had hollow crests and others lacked them: “duck-billed” does not mean they were ducks or that they all ate the same foods.
