Beyond the game

The real Hesperosaurus

This plant-eating stegosaur is known from several fairly complete skeletons. Its remains come from an older part of the Morrison Formation than those of some more famous stegosaurs.

That shape helps differentiate it from other stegosaurs. The layers of the Morrison Formation where it appears also place it in a specific part of the history of these animals.

Stegosaurids carried bony plates and spikes along its backs and tails. The plates were not parts of the vertebrae; they were structures in the skin called osteoderms.
