Beyond the game
The real Kentrosaurus
Hundreds of bones were recovered during expeditions to Tendaguru between 1909 and 1912. Although a complete skeleton is missing, the set allows us to reconstruct a good part of this relative of Stegosaurus.
The longest spines were at the end of the tail. Gathering this material allows us to compare parts that belonged to different individuals. Rebuilding depends on carefully putting the pieces together and recognizing what is still missing.
Stegosaurids carried bony plates and spikes along its backs and tails. The plates were not parts of the vertebrae; they were structures in the skin called osteoderms.
