Beyond the game
The real Brachylophosaurus
The first skull and skeleton were found in 1936 and named in 1953. Later finds in Montana greatly expanded the material available to study this hadrosaurid.
Several skeletons and an accumulation of bones are known from Montana and Alberta. Having several skeletons helps to recognize which traits are repeated and which may vary between individuals. In an animal known from a single bone, that comparison would be much more difficult; here, new findings enriched the initial portrait.
Hadrosaurids had dental batteries for processing vegetation. Some had hollow crests and others lacked them: “duck-billed” does not mean they were ducks or that they all ate the same foods.
