Bonitasaura’s mouth held a surprise: part of its jaw may have worked as a plant cutter. This titanosaur had a long neck, a bulky body and a small head. A ridge on its jaw may have supported a beak-like covering, perhaps used to cut vegetation before swallowing it.

Beyond the game

The real Bonitasaura

The partial skeleton was found in Río Negro, in Argentina’s Patagonia. The individual was still growing, so its size and some of its proportions do not necessarily represent those of a fully grown adult.

Sauropods shared a general outline, but their mouths were not all alike. Studying teeth and jaws helps researchers investigate different feeding methods within a group often reduced to ‘long-necked giants’.
