The known Wulong specimen was young, yet already had surprisingly elaborate feathers. Its small body was feathered, with long feathers on the limbs and tail. Related to other small feathered raptors, it looked far more like a fluffy animal than a scaly movie lizard.

Beyond the game

The real Wulong

A very complete skeleton preserved feather impressions. Study of the bones showed that the individual was still young, despite already carrying ornaments that might seem adult-like.

Feathers had more than one function and did not appear only for flight. They could cover the body or serve as signals. Wulong’s fossil lets researchers study how feathers developed before the animal finished growing.
