Beyond the game
The real Utahraptor
It is known from fossils of adults and young individuals. Its description in 1993 placed it among the large dromaeosaurids, the relatives with curved claws on their feet.
It is one of the largest known representatives of the dromaeosaurids. Finding individuals of different ages allows their growth to be compared. It is not enough to enlarge a baby as if it were a photograph: the proportions of an animal can change as it becomes an adult.
This family includes the animals commonly called raptors, with a large claw on the second toe. Feathers are documented in its members; movie reconstructions are not a reliable guide to their actual size.
