Beyond the game
The real Achillobator
It was a large dromaeosaurid from the Bayan Shireh Formation. Its first remains were found in 1989 and described ten years later.
Its robust body and strong legs differentiated it from lighter dromaeosaurids. Its discovery and description were separated by a decade. Preparing, comparing, and understanding remains is part of the work that turns a field find into published knowledge.
This family includes the animals commonly called raptors, with a large claw on the second toe. Feathers are documented in its members; movie reconstructions are not a reliable guide to their actual size.
