Beyond the game
The real Suchomimus
Suchomimus had a long, shallow snout reminiscent of a crocodile. That resemblance inspired its name, but it was a theropod dinosaur belonging to the spinosaurids. Baryonyx and Spinosaurus are other members of the same family, with elongated jaws and conical teeth.
It was described in 1998 from discoveries in the Elrhaz Formation of Niger. Remains attributed to several individuals make its anatomy better documented than that of some relatives known from only a few fragments. Repeated features can be compared across the specimens.
The skull fits a role for aquatic prey in its diet. Yet jaw shape alone does not provide an exact menu or settle how much time the animal spent in water. Those questions require several kinds of evidence.
A family of theropods with elongated snouts and conical teeth. Their aquatic adaptations and habits differed and remain under study.

A crocodile-like snout indicates anatomical similarity, not that Suchomimus was a crocodile or lived exactly like one.
