Recognizing this giant among incomplete bones required a different approach to comparison.

Recognizing this giant among incomplete bones required a different approach to comparison. It was a sauropod related to Brachiosaurus, with a long neck, a small head and limbs supporting a large plant-eating body. Reconstructing it requires comparisons with better-known relatives.

Beyond the game

The real Sonorasaurus

The fossils were found in the Whetstone Mountains of southern Arizona. Early identification was difficult and improved when the same bones were correctly compared across different dinosaur groups.

An isolated bone can mislead if compared with the wrong animal. Sonorasaurus’s story shows why identification relies on combinations of features and careful reassessment, not simply the size of a fragment.
