Jinyunpelta’s tail helps trace the history of one of the dinosaurs’ most famous defenses. It was a low, armored plant eater with bony plates in its skin and a well-developed tail club. The tail combined a stiff section with a broadened end: a structure more complex than a simple heavy tip.

Beyond the game

The real Jinyunpelta

The remains were found in Jinyun, in China’s Zhejiang Province. Several skeletons allowed the skull, armor and tail to be studied, and the genus was described in 2018.

Jinyunpelta matters because it shows a complete tail club in a relatively early ankylosaurid branch. It helps researchers investigate when the different parts of this structure appeared, without assuming they all evolved at once.
