Beyond the game

The real Glyptodon

It was a large, plant-eating relative of armadillos. Fossils known since the early nineteenth century help researchers reconstruct the variety of armored mammals in South America.

Its shell resembles a turtle’s, but these similar structures arose in very different lineages. Bones and other features reveal its actual relationships beyond that first impression.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
