Changyuraptor had long feathers on all four limbs and a particularly striking tail. Long feathers grew on both its arms and hind legs, with an especially long set at the tail tip. This arrangement gives it the outline of a ‘four-winged’ dinosaur, although its movements must be reconstructed by studying its body and feathers.

Beyond the game

The real Changyuraptor

Its remains come from Liaoning, China. The fossil preserves enough detail to compare its feathers with those of other small dromaeosaurids and investigate how its tail may have helped control movement.

There is no need to imagine it as a modern bird with two identical pairs of wings. Its limbs had different positions and functions, and reconstructions of its aerial abilities still depend on how its anatomy and size are interpreted.
