Beyond the game

The real Albertaceratops

It belonged to the centrosaurines, a branch of horned dinosaurs. Its remains from Alberta’s Oldman Formation reveal some of that group’s regional variety.

Its fossils in the Oldman Formation help scientists compare the region’s centrosaurines. Both the location and the rock layers are essential parts of its story.

This family includes large dinosaurs with beaks, frills, and horns or bony bumps. These structures help distinguish lineages, but their shape alone cannot establish each species’ behavior.
