Beyond the game

The real Yutyrannus

Three specimens found in Liaoning, China, preserve direct evidence of plumage. Thanks to them it is known that there were also large tyrannosauroids with this body coverage. It is not just about imagining it because it is similar to other animals.

The discovery expands the image of a family that many people associate with large, bare-skinned predators. In a reconstruction of Yutyrannus, the feathers are an essential part of what the fossils tell, and not an ornament added by the artist.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
