Beyond the game

The real Guanlong

A partially preserved adult and an almost complete juvenile have been identified. Its description in 2006 helped document an early phase of tyrannosauroid evolution.

A large crest on its head distinguished it from many later tyrannosauroids. An adult and a juvenile provide complementary information. Comparing them allows us to distinguish growth traits and helps reconstruct this early stage without assuming that they all looked like Tyrannosaurus.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
