Beyond the game

The real Uintatherium

It was a dinoceratan mammal with recognized species in the Americas and Asia. Later comparisons brought many of its historical names together within the same genus.

Its long canine teeth did not make it a meat-eater: this dinoceratan was a herbivore. A single large tooth cannot reveal an animal’s whole diet; the rest of the mouth and body matter too.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
