Teruel preserves evidence that Europe was also a land of giant sauropods. This enormous animal had a long neck and tail and a body supported by very sturdy legs. Its head remained small compared with the rest of its body: it did not need a gigantic mouth to eat plants.

Beyond the game

The real Turiasaurus

The remains were found in Spain’s Teruel Province. Their study revealed the sauropod group now called turiasaurs, with relatives also known elsewhere.

Size estimates for these giants change when more bones are found or skeletal proportions are reassessed. What the fossils do show is that Europe had enormous sauropods, not just small species living on islands.
