Beyond the game
The real Titanoboa
The discovery took place in Cerrejón and the scientific description was published in 2009. At first, vertebrae and ribs were known, enough pieces to begin investigating an extraordinary animal. Later expeditions added more material.
The story of this snake links two very different landscapes: the place where it lived and the mine where its fossils appeared. Sediments allow animals to be recovered from a disappeared environment, even if the current surface no longer resembles their former home.
This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
