Thylacoleo carnifex

The so-called "marsupial lion" belonged to a different lineage than lions and other felines.

The nickname "marsupial lion" describes Thylacoleo's predatory role, not a relation to lions.

Beyond the game

The real Thylacoleo carnifex

It was a carnivorous marsupial that occupied a role as a large predator in Australia. The T. carnifex species reached an approximate weight of one hundred to one hundred and thirty kilos.

The “marsupial lion” was an Australian marsupial, belonging to a different lineage from lions and other cats. Animals can play similar roles in their ecosystems without belonging to the same family.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
