Beyond the game

The real Tarchia

It was a herbivorous ankylosaurid. Its record is part of the diversity of armored dinosaurs that inhabited Mongolia towards the end of the Cretaceous.

The marks document a contact between teeth and bone. Its study requires distinguishing that evidence from a complete combat scene, which the fossil does not preserve like a film.

Ankylosaurids were protected by bones embedded in their skin. Many had a tail club, but the arrangement of the armor and the shape of the club vary between species.
