Beyond the game

The real Stegodon

It was an extinct elephant relative with ridges across its molars. Fossils range from the late Miocene to the Pleistocene, across large parts of Asia and also Africa.

Its name means “roofed tooth,” referring to the shape of its teeth. Molars are particularly useful when comparing proboscideans. These animals are distinguished by more than size or tusks: the mouth preserves important clues to their history.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
