Beyond the game
The real Sinornithosaurus
This was a feathered dromaeosaurid. Finds from different layers of the Yixian Formation helped establish some of the early evidence that feathers were not limited to birds.
Its discovery in 1999 expanded the evidence for feathers in non-avian dinosaurs. Its findings are part of a series of discoveries that changed popular reconstructions. The plumage is incorporated because of the preserved evidence, not because all dinosaurs should be drawn the same.
This family includes the animals commonly called raptors, with a large claw on the second toe. Feathers are documented in its members; movie reconstructions are not a reliable guide to their actual size.
