Beyond the game

The real Pteranodon

The largest individuals of Pteranodon longiceps exceeded six meters in wingspan. That measurement goes from the tip of one wing to the other with both extended; It does not describe the length of the body. Its size is best understood by imagining that horizontal space.

More than a thousand fossil specimens are known, some with very well preserved skulls and skeletons. Such a large collection allows us to compare individuals of different ages and sizes, and to know this pterosaur in much more detail than other animals represented by a few remains.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
