Beyond the game
The real Oviraptor
Oviraptor was a small feathered theropod from Mongolia. Its secure identification rests on a limited collection of remains, including a partial skeleton and material associated with a nest. The fossil record is more restricted than the familiarity of its name might suggest.
The name preserves an early interpretation that the animal stole eggs. A name is not proof of a diet. Discoveries of other oviraptorids sitting on nests have helped researchers reconsider how members of the family interacted with eggs and cared for them.
Its beak and jaws have prompted different ideas about feeding. The evidence does not establish an exclusive egg-eating lifestyle. Keeping the historical nickname separate from the scientific interpretation makes room for what is known and what remains uncertain.
An evolutionary family whose members share ancestors. This grouping does not imply that one named dinosaur directly became another.

Egg eating is not established by the name or the association with a nest. Its precise diet remains debated.
