Beyond the game
The real Nothrotheriops
It was a North American ground sloth, with two recognized species. Among them is N. shastensis, known as the Shasta ground sloth.
Two species are known, including the so-called Shasta ground sloth. The size helps to imagine it, but the comparison with a bear does not imply that they shared a close family relationship.
This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
