Beyond the game

The real Nothosaurus

It lived in the ancient Tethys Ocean. Fossils occur from Europe and North Africa to China, making it the best-known member of the nothosaurs.

Its name means “false lizard,” but it was not a dinosaur. It belonged to the nothosaurs, one of the groups of aquatic reptiles that lived in prehistoric times.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
