Beyond the game

The real Mosasaurus

It was a marine lizard, a member of the squamates. The first skulls were found near Maastricht and mistaken for crocodiles or whales before their true identity was recognized.

A fossil called Capelliniosuchus was first interpreted as a crocodile and later related to Mosasaurus. Revisions changed those identifications. Its story shows why living in water and being large is not enough to establish an animal's kinship.

Mosasaurs were squamate reptiles adapted to the sea. Aquatic life produced streamlined bodies, but did not turn them into fish.
