Beyond the game

The real Meraxes

Meraxes was a large carcharodontosaurid from Patagonia. It belonged to a different theropod branch from Tyrannosaurus, despite also having a large head and reduced forelimbs.

Its small arms were functional limbs, with bones preserved in unusual detail for this group. The discovery helped reveal how arm reduction appeared independently among giant theropods.
