Beyond the game

The real Megaloceros

The giant deer belonged to a lineage related to today's fallow deer. Although it is popularly known as "Irish elk", its distribution extended across much of Eurasia.

Its closest living relatives are fallow deer. Familiar common names make it memorable, but can be misleading about both its family and the wide area where it lived.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
