Beyond the game

The real Inostrancevia

It was a large carnivorous therapsid from the gorgonopsian group. The Russian finds include almost complete skeletons that allowed the study of one of the large predators of the Permian.

Several skulls and two nearly complete skeletons reveal much of its body as well as its head. It belonged to the gorgonopsians, a branch of therapsids separate from the carnivorous dinosaurs that appeared later.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
