Beyond the game

The real Ichthyosaurus

It gave its name to the group of ichthyosaurs and is one of its best-known genera. Some fossils previously attributed to it actually belong to other genera, such as Protoichthyosaurus.

Mary Anning helped discover and bring attention to its fossils in nineteenth-century England. Some specimens once assigned to Ichthyosaurus have since been moved to other genera. Checking these identifications clarifies which features and locations really belong to this animal.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
