Beyond the game
The real Homotherium
It was a saber-toothed cat roughly the size of a lion. Its neck and legs were relatively long, and it was one of the last members of the machairodontine lineage.
It was one of the last lineages of saber-toothed cats, along with Smilodon. Its relatively elongated neck and legs gave it its own proportions. The label "sabertooth" brings together animals recognizable by their fangs, but does not describe a single body model.
The cat family includes living species and extinct branches. Saber-shaped teeth also evolved in animals that were not cats: a similar shape does not prove a close relationship.
