The real Diplomoceras

Diplomoceras maximum was an ammonite with an exceptionally long shell bent into repeated turns. Its paperclip-like outline is a real fossil feature, not a malformed spiral.

The shell geometry distinguishes it from a tightly coiled ammonite. Interpreting the complete living animal and its movement is less straightforward than recognizing the preserved shell.
