Stegouros had a tail quite unlike the tools carried by other familiar dinosaurs. Its low body and short legs led to an extraordinary tail, where several bony plates joined into a flattened structure. It was neither the rounded club of some ankylosaurs nor the spiked tail of a stegosaur.

Beyond the game

The real Stegouros

The nearly complete skeleton was found in southern Chile. Its preservation allows many parts of a single individual to be studied, revealing a combination of features that was previously poorly understood.

Stegouros belongs to a Southern Hemisphere branch of armored dinosaurs. Its tail is a reminder that evolution can produce very different ways to defend or interact, even among animals in the same broad group.
