Beyond the game
The real Panoplosaurus
Few certain specimens are known, all from the Dinosaur Park Formation. Historical confusion with Edmontonia complicated interpretations of its distribution and ecology.
It was heavily armored, but its tail did not carry the large club of other armored dinosaurs. Its history was for a time confused with that of Edmontonia. Correctly separating the specimens allows us to study more carefully where each animal appeared and what characteristics it had.
Ankylosaurs developed bony armor in their skin. Some lineages had a tail club and others did not; a club should not be added to every armored dinosaur.
