Beyond the game

The real Nigersaurus

It had a short neck for a sauropod. The first fossils were described in 1976, but only new, more complete remains allowed it to be named in 1999.

Its story shows the value of finding more complete material. The first bones were described long before researchers had enough elements to name the genus.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
