Beyond the game
The real Leedsichthys
It was one of the largest known fish and the largest ray-finned fish identified. Its name honors the collector Alfred Nicholson Leeds, whose findings helped describe it in the 19th century.
Specialized structures in its gills filtered tiny organisms from the water. Its great size did not depend on catching enormous prey. It followed a very different feeding strategy from the large marine predators.
This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
