Beyond the game

The real Haplocanthosaurus

Two species are recognized based on incomplete skeletons. The first was named in 1903 and another, discovered by a student in Colorado, received its description in 1988.

Its name refers to unbranched vertebral spines, unlike the forked ones of some other sauropods. Its two species are known from incomplete skeletons and were described many years apart. The history of a genus can keep growing long after its first discovery.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
