Beyond the game

The real Gargoyleosaurus

It is one of the early ankylosaurs known from reasonably complete remains. Its reference specimen was found in 1995 in Wyoming and was described in 1998.

It combined characteristics of early armored dinosaurs and later groups. This combination allows us to compare stages in the group's history. A reasonably complete skeleton is especially useful when studying animals of which isolated parts are often found.

Ankylosaurs developed bony armor in their skin. Some lineages had a tail club and others did not; a club should not be added to every armored dinosaur.
