Beyond the game

The real Erketu

Its remains were collected on expeditions in 2002 and 2003. Neck vertebrae recovered during separate trips allowed its description and later filled in more of its anatomy.

Its neck was extraordinarily long; the proportions of the rest of the body are less known. The vertebrae collected in different campaigns added pieces to the reconstruction. Knowing one region of the skeleton well does not guarantee that the proportions of the others are equally certain.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
