Beyond the game

The real Edestus

Edestus heinrichi was a cartilaginous fish with unusual tooth-bearing structures in its jaws. Its dentition looked very different from the separate rows of teeth in a modern shark.

The arrangement and replacement of its teeth are central to its reconstruction. Its tooth-bearing blades differed from the spiral tooth whorl of Helicoprion.
