Beyond the game

The real Dryptosaurus

It is known from a fragmentary skeleton with parts of the jaw, limbs and vertebrae. The initial name, Laelaps, was replaced because it already belonged to a mite.

Charles R. Knight’s illustrations helped make the animal famous despite its scarce fossils. An image can fill gaps to help us imagine it, but those additions do not replace actual fossils or make every pictured proportion certain.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
