Bird

Dodo

Its closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon, although the dodo had lost the ability to fly.

The dodo was a bird from Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, and a surprising relative of pigeons.

Beyond the game

The real Dodo

Its life was spent on land: it could not fly and the preserved remains indicate an approximate height of 63–75 centimeters. Its closest living relative is the Nicobar pigeon. It is enough to compare both animals to see to what extent the same family can bring together different forms.

The drawings from the 17th century do not always show the same appearance. That is why they are studied together with subfossil remains, which are ancient remains preserved without having undergone complete fossilization. The most famous image of the dodo does not have to be an exact portrait of all its specimens.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
