Beyond the game

The real Austroraptor

It was a bipedal carnivore measuring approximately five to six meters. Its size places it among the largest paravians, the large group that also includes birds and their close relatives.

Its forearms were especially short compared to those of other dromaeosaurids. Its construction reminds us that a group does not have a single bodily form. Kinship is recognized by sets of features, even if the proportions of the limbs are different.

This grouping describes evolutionary relationships. Its members share ancestors; they do not form a chain in which one must turn into another.
